The Packet Riders and Hacker Busters
Helping Students Understand the Internet and How It Works
When your children want to find information or communicate with friends, chances are they race to the Internet. Many students are comfortable using the Internet but don't worry about whether a game they download has a virus, or a hacker can steal their information, or if the people they meet online are not who they claim to be.
To use the Internet safely and responsibly, your children should know the basics of how it works. You may believe that your children know everything they need to know about technology and there is little you can do to help them. However, that may not be true.
Many children know how to use computers, yet their knowledge is often quite limited. They may know how to send and receive e-mail, download files, chat online, word process, create presentations for school, and surf the Internet, but they may not understand (1) why all this works for them, (2) how hackers and viruses can keep them from doing what they like to do on the computer, (3) how computers can be used to help others, and (4) how to be safe online.
Packetville is a unique online community that can help children understand the Internet. This may encourage them to pursue additional opportunities in the realm of networking and computer technology.
This project began when an executive at Cisco asked programmers to create an engaging program for "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day." The result was a dynamic learning adventure in video game format that intrigued all the girls in attendance. The game, Peter Packet, taught students about the Internet as they made their way though its challenges.
Cisco Networking Academy students in middle school, high school, and college tested Packetville next. The students told Cisco that they wished Packetville had been around when they started their training because it provided a good overview of computers and networks in a fun setting.
The game was so well received that Cisco decided to create sites with additional games and activities. These sites, the Packet Riders for children aged 8-11 and the Hacker Busters for ages 12-14, feature fun learning experiences for students with different levels of computer expertise. As a parent, you may be surprised to discover that girls enjoy the games and activities as much as boys do. This may be because the games and lessons emphasize how technology can be used to help people around the world.
