Printing Packetville Characters on Iron-on Transfer Paper

With iron-on transfer paper, club members can iron their favorite Packetville characters onto cotton clothing such as t-shirts and socks, or cloth. This is a great way to create inexpensive shirts for club members. You can also make the cover of a scrapbook filled with pictures of club events and other memorabilia, or use inexpensive muslin to make large banners with transferred photos and graphics.

Instructions

Have your members select an image or several images from the Character section on the Activities page.

Club members can use a photo-editing program such as Adobe PhotoShop Elements® to create designs they like from the images. If they want to include their club name, refer to the instructions below for reversing the writing.

If you don't have a photo-editing program, the images can be inserted into a paint program such as Kid Pix® or a word processing program such as Microsoft Word® or AppleWorks®. Word processing programs don’t offer as much flexibility in design, but these programs work well for resizing images.

Instruct club members to make sure their designs will fit on the article of clothing or piece of cloth they have in mind.

If club members include words in their designs, make sure they check the spelling with you before printing. They also need to reverse the writing in the word processor or photo-editing program by using the flip, mirror, or rotate image function, so the words will appear correctly when they are ironed on. Consult the help section of the software application you are using for help. In Microsoft Word®, you can do this by putting the text into the Word Art or drawing feature and choosing the Rotate or Flip option from the Draw menu.

Club members should print their designs on regular paper and examine the printouts closely. If they change their designs, they should test print them on regular paper again, to avoid wasting transfer paper.

Determine the correct way to load transfer paper into the printer by drawing a line on the top side of a sheet of regular paper, and printing sample text on it. Note which side of the paper the text appears on and load the iron-on transfer paper accordingly.

Make sure club members follow the directions on the transfer paper package for printing and ironing their designs onto their clothing. For best results, test a few designs on an old t-shirt or piece of cotton cloth before starting. Using a piece of cardboard under the area you are ironing can also help produce clean and crisp transfers of members' designs.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: You'll need to decide if you or club members will use the iron. If club members use the iron, make sure they are carefully supervised and establish safety rules before they begin.
