Packet Riders Instructional Materials Starting a Club
Starting a Club

Most Packet Riders and Hacker Busters clubs are started by community leaders, parents, or teachers who are eager to help young people learn more about technology. Anyone with an interest in technology can start a club.

How to sign up
To gain access to the Packet Rider and Hacker Buster online club materials, all you need to do is sign up on the Packetville site.

When to meet
    Community club leaders and parents
Choose a time when your members can attend and other leaders are available to help you. Good meeting times include after school and weekends.

During summer vacation, you can sponsor Packet Riders or Hacker Busters camp sessions.

    Computer teachers
Consider transforming classes into Packet Riders or Hacker Busters club meetings. The club lessons, resources, and activities meet the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Students set by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Students in your classes can become Packet Riders or Hacker Busters as you lead them through to meeting the ISTE NETS.

All of the topics you generally cover in your curriculum can easily fit into the club goal of helping students understand technologies. You can combine club activities with your regular courses of study.

    Classroom teachers
Think about incorporating a club into a lesson in your curriculum. If students use computers in the classroom, you can easily add club activities. Since club activities help students understand the Internet, careers in technology, community service, and creative ways to use computers, the clubs will slip neatly into the curriculum as a lesson, unit, or year-long learning project.

    School extracurricular activity advisor
You may want to schedule a club after school or at some other time when students can attend. Students who are interested in computers will appreciate the opportunity to learn more about technology.
Getting started
Whether you are interested in starting a club in your community or school, you'll need to speak with others in your organization about your ideas. Introduce them to Packetville with a quick tour of the site and encourage them to explore its resources. If your club will be school-based, you'll need the permission of your administration before announcing plans to the students.
