Creating Membership Cards
If you'd like to provide membership cards for your students, here are some ideas to help you create them:
- Open a Word Processing or Desktop Publishing document and create your own membership cards.
Your software may have some templates available to help you with your design. You may want to
use one of the characters from our Characters Library on your cards. If you are planning to
print on paper that is already formatted into a page of cards, make sure your arrangement will
work with the size cards you've selected. When you are satisfied with your arrangement of graphics
in the document, print first on plain paper to make sure it is what you want. Then print on a sheet
of formatted paper, regular paper, or photo paper. If you are using regular or photo paper, after
your cards print, they'll need to be cut out.
- 2. Use the Microsoft Word ® or pdf template provided for you in this section to create sets of membership cards or use one of them as a model for your own templates. See the notes below before printing.
Notes About Printing
Always pick the type of paper for the printer you are planning to use. If you
don't, you may find that your colors bleed into each other and ruin your graphics.
Depending upon the type of paper you pick, there may be a difference between the paper
used in ink jet and laser printers. Follow the directions for the paper you select.
For your membership cards, you'll need to decide if you want to use matte or glossy finish paper.
The templates provided in this section should work well with photo paper or
plain paper. You may also want to try printing them on business card paper that
is formatted to create small membership-sized cards. You local stores may not
carry this type of formatted paper, so you may have to order it online from an
office supply store.
Be warned that although the pdf provided will work with many (formatted) papers
and printers, how your pages come out will depend upon your paper and printer.
Using the MS Word template, you can change around the copy to fit the formatted
paper you have.
Formatted paper usually comes with a regular paper template that you can
duplicate and use before you try printing on your business card-formatted paper.
It's wise to print on the regular paper template first because you don't want to
ruin a sheet of the formatted paper.
If you find that when you print the template to the regular paper template
that the cards are not positioned as they should be, you'll need to create your
own document as described in #1 above or by designing the MS Word template. That
way you can position the cards to work with your paper and printer.
Information on Business Card-Formatted Paper
You'll probably be able to find business card-formatted paper at office supply
stores, but you can also order the paper online. Glossy cards cost more than
matte-finish cards, with the matte running less than $20 for 200 cards and the
glossy, less than $25.
